PrEP stands for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis which is medication used for the prevention of HIV / AIDS. The most popular brand medication used for PrEP is Truvada which contains tenofovir and emtricitabine as its active ingredients. However, there are currently generic Truvada medications available. These generics contain the same active ingredients and we are making them available to you for a lower cost. Learn more about generics here.
Truvada as PrEP
Truvada is a once-daily oral pill, which combines two potent HIV drugs: emtricitabine (Emtriva) and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (Viread). It works by blocking the viral enzyme HIV reverse transcriptase, thus preventing the virus from making more copies of itself.
Experts strongly believe that taking PrEP consistently can reduce a patient’s risk up to 99%. In the iPrEx Trial, Truvada showed significant risk reduction among gay and bisexual men, and transgender women. It also reduces risk of HIV infection among heterosexual men and women, based on two large trials, TDF2 and Partners PrEP. In the Bangkok Tenofovir Study, it also demonstrated efficacy on people who inject drugs.
Truvada (TDF-FTC) is one of several medications FDA-approved for treating human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis B virus, but it is also an important tool in the HIV prevention kit. It is the only drug approved both for HIV-positive and uninfected individuals. The fixed-dose coformulated tablet has demonstrated efficacy in several placebo-controlled studies. In 2012, Truvada was granted FDA approval and, after a couple of years, was also supported by US Public Health Services as the drug of choice for pre-exposure prophylaxis.
PrEP medications can help save lives around the world
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has gained notoriety in every corner of the globe although prevalence varies from nation to nation; some regions are more affected than others. Various sources estimated that as of 2015, there are 36.7 million HIV cases worldwide, of which 30% are unaware of their status. The majority of HIV-infected individuals live in Swaziland, Lesotho, and Botswana. Outside Africa, the Bahamas has the highest prevalence rate. High transmission rates in these regions makes pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) an unequivocal necessity. To date, the only approved regimen for HIV prevention is Truvada, but it is possible to order equivalent medications from India through us.
