What is Viread (Tenofovir)?

Viread is the brand name version of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate. It is part of the antiretroviral drug class and is used to treat (not cure) patients with HIV-1 infection and HBV infections. Viread is manufactured by Gilead Sciences and offers the generic versions Tenofovir and Tenofovir DF. The drug comes caplet, powder and tablet form. The active ingredient in this medication is tenofovir disoproxil fumarate.

What is this medication used for?

Viread and its generic counterparts are antiviral medications that help patients with immunodeficiency conditions like HIV-1. It is also used to help prevent infections in patients with Hepatitis B. The primary goal of this medication is to prevent infections and viruses from multiplying in the body.

How to take Tenofovir

Viread is taken in both caplet and powder form. Before taking tenofovir, your doctor should ensure that you do not have Hepatitis B because that changes the dosage and/or administration of the dosage. The medication can be taken with or without food. Dosage amounts for children are based on weight and because of this, the dosage will change as the child loses or gains weight.

It is recommended that the powdered version of Viread be mixed up in yogurt or other soft food that can be swallowed without chewing. Doctor instructions should be followed precisely.


  • Adults: 300mg once daily
  • Children: Aged 2 and older, weighing between 37lbs and 77lbs. Dosage is based on weight.
  • Viread powder: Adults and children who weigh at least 22 lbs. and are unable to swallow pills are given powder that is based on body weight.

Warnings and precautions

Patients taking Viread should know that there are precautions that must be taken. Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you have any of the following:

  • Liver or kidney problems (including having dialysis treatments)
  • Bone problems
  • HIV infection
  • If you are pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant
  • HBV infection
  • Any other condition requiring medication
  • Hypersensitivity or allergic reactions to valacyclovir or any of its ingredients

Common side effects

  • Nausea
  • Depression
  • Stomach pain
  • Headache
  • Weakness
  • Diarrhea

In some people that have advanced HBV-infection, other common side effects may include:

  • Fever
  • Itching
  • Vomiting
  • Stomach pain
  • Dizziness
  • Sleeping problems

Serious side effects

  • New or worsening kidney problems, possible kidney failure
  • Changes in immune system
  • Lactic acidosis
  • Severe liver problems
  • Bone problems
