What is Telzir (Fosamprenavir) Used For? Side Effects and Dosage

What is Telzir (Fosamprenavir)?

Telzir is a brand name belonging to a drug class called protease inhibitors. It is sold as Telzir in most countries and Lexiva in the United States. This drug is manufactured by ViiV, a joint venture by GlaxoSmithKline and Pfizer. It inhibits the protease enzymes that cause human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections and is often used in combination with other medications to help treat (but not cure) patients with HIV-1 infections.

What is it used for?

This product is used in combination with other protease inhibitors. It works by binding to the active site of the HIV-1 protease. This prevents precursors from being processed. As a result, viral particles that are immature and non-infectious are formed.

How is this drug taken?

Telzir 700mg tablets can be taken with or without food. The 50mg/ml suspension should be taken without food for adults and with food for pediatric patients. The dosing and administration of this product is dependent on whether the patient is therapy-naïve or not. Dosing should be adjusted for patients who have hepatic impairment. Pregnant women can consider this product if they were on a stable regimen prior to pregnancy and are virologically suppressed. Dosing for pediatric patients should be based on body weight.
