Viraday Information

Viraday (efavirenz, emtricitabine, and tenofovir) is commonly referred to by its brand name Atripla in North America. Outside of the U.S. the Indian generic versions are known as Viraday and Vonavir. Both are used for the treatment of HIV/AIDS, and is a combination of 3 reverse transcriptase inhibitors. They work by slowing the growth of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS and lowering the amount of HIV in the body.

General Precautions

Never take any form of medication without consulting with your doctor.

Do not take if you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant.

Some medicines may react with Viraday or Vonavir, please ensure your doctor is aware of all medications and herbal preparations you may be taking.

Lactic acidosis (buildup of an acid in the blood), a severe and sometimes fatal side effect, has been reported with this type of medicine. Tell your doctor right away if you experience extreme weakness or tiredness; unusual muscle pain; difficulty breathing; stomach pain with nausea and vomiting; feeling cold, especially in the arms and legs; dizziness or lightheadedness; or fast or irregular heartbeat. Severe and sometimes fatal liver problems have been reported with this type of medicine. Tell your doctor right away if you experience yellowing of the skin or eyes; dark urine; light-colored bowel movements (stools); not feeling like eating for several days; nausea; or stomach pain.

Get medical help even for mild symptoms of lactic acidosis.

Viraday/Vonavir/Atripla has been tied to severe liver problems. Contact your doctor immediately at the onset of symptoms like: nausea, stomach pain, fever, loss of apetite, dark urine, and jaundice.

How to Take Efavirenz, Emtricitabine, and Tenofovir

Take on an empty stomach at bedtime

Take the medication in the exact manner as prescribed by your doctor.

Never skip doses. Even if you are feeling well!

Take Viraday/Vonavir at the same time each day.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. Never double-up on a dose, simply try and get back on schedule.

Store at room temperature.
