Adesera (adefovir dipovoxil) is commonly referred to by its brand name Hepsera in North America. Outside of the U.S. the Indian generic version is known as Adesera. Adesera is used to treat chronic hepatitis B. Adesera works by preventing viral cells from multiplying in the body and infecting new liver cells. This antiviral medication will not cure hepatitis.

Never take any form of medication without consulting with your doctor.

Do not take if you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant, or are breast feeding.

Adefovir can cause severe kidney problems. This is especially true if you take certain medications, or already have kidney disease. Ask your doctor.

Symptoms may become severe after stopping use of adefovir.

Taking adefovir will not stop the spread of hepatitis. Always practice safe sex, and never share needles.

Tell your doctor if you have been exposed to HIV, or if you have untreated HIV/AIDS. Hepatitis medications sometimes have the adverse effect of creating immunity to HIV medications.

Lactic acidosis (buildup of an acid in the blood), a severe and sometimes fatal side effect, has been reported with this type of medicine. Tell your doctor right away if you experience extreme weakness or tiredness; unusual muscle pain; difficulty breathing; stomach pain with nausea and vomiting; feeling cold, especially in the arms and legs; dizziness or lightheadedness; or fast or irregular heartbeat.
