Abamune (abacavir sulfate) is commonly referred to by its brand name Ziagen in North America. Outside of the U.S. the Indian generic version is known as Abamune.
Abacavir is used for the treatment of HIV/AIDS, and is a nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitor. It works by slowing down the growth of HIV,
the virus that causes AIDS.
Never take any form of medication without consulting with your doctor.
Do not take if you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant, or are breast feeding.
Some medicines may react with Abacavir, please ensure your doctor is aware of all medications and herbal preparations you may be taking.
Do not take if you have had a recent abnormal liver function test, or have moderate to severe liver impairment!
If you have a history of heart problems, do not take abacavir.
Alcohol increases the risks of toxic side effects with abacavir sulfate. Inform your doctor about your drinking habits.
Methadone can reduce the medicines effectiveness.
Abacavir can be taken with or without food.
Take the medication in the exact manner as prescribed by your doctor.
Never skip doses. Even if you are feeling well!
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. Never double-up on a dose, simply try and get back on schedule.
Store at room temperature.
Be aware of the signs of allergic reactions to abacavir.
Never take with alcohol.
